moray: n.
- any voracious marine coastal eel of the family Muraenidae, esp. Muraena helena, marked with brilliant patterns and colours.
moray:
How and when machine obtained:
- moray was rapidly built when UCC determined the need for a bastion host to server Web, FTP, and other services outside our firewall.
History prior to arrival at UCC:
- None... moray was built from bits bought by UCC and UCCans.
UCC history of machine:
- In late 1995 we upgraded the machine from 4Mb to 8Mb RAM, due to the increasing load on the machine.
- Machine was further upgraded to 16Mb RAM, but was still struggling a bit. In late 1996 moray lost /etc, causing total havoc about the UCC with little things like authentication and door opening ceasing to co-operate.
- In early 1998, Moray's HDD and NIC were transplanted into another machine, since the UART on Moray's Multi I/O card were FITH. This had the effect of breaking access to the door opener, and the coke machine. We fed it another 16MB of RAM at the same time.
- In 1999, was replaced by mooneye. moray is now dead and disassembled.
Current machine tasks:
None, but before decommissioning, was doing:- Primary DNS for zone ucc.gu.uwa.edu.au
- WWW server
- SOCKS gateway
- Mail delivery system
- FTP server
- Coke software auth server.
Current software configuration:
- An eclectic mishmash of Slackware 1.x, Debian packages and much custom UCC code. The kernel should be a recent stable Linux release.
Current hardware configuration:
In pieces, somewhere, but was:- Intel 80486-DX/33 CPU
- 32MB RAM (8*4MB 30pin)
- 210MB IBM IDE disk
- SMC Elite (8013) ISA NIC.
- 8-bit mono GFX and TTL mono screen.
Future plans for machine:
- In the future moray will do less and less as it gets older and slower. Typically our NFS server should also me handing mail, so local delivery is effected. Services will be migrated to other machines.
Special notes:
- Moray is over worked and underloved. Like most older UCCans, I guess
Thanks:
- [DJL] for making and breaking dispense on moray, at random times, [MTL] for configuring the Black Box, so door and coke work.
